5 Tips for Nailing Your Job Interview

Once you’ve landed the in-person job interview, you need to take at least an hour (minimum) to prepare yourself accordingly. As a recruiter, I take pride in preparing our candidates for job interviews and it’s something that everyone can brush up on.

Here my top 5 tips for a succesful job interview…

1) Do Your Research

There is more to the job interview than just the information in the job description. A smart candidate will do their research on the company (and competitors), the role and the person(s) you are meeting.

Review the company website – making sure you review their values, company information and any recent news pertaining to them. A quick Google search can bring up a recent news release from the company or article in the press. Read through the job description and highlight any points you have questions about or areas to highlight your direct or relevant experience.

Finally check out the LinkedIn profile of the interviewer. You can gain valuable insights into their career and potentially what they are looking for in a new hire.

2) Dress to Impress

It is a pretty obvious point to tell you to always look your best for a job interview, but there are varying opinions as to what’s appropriate and I’ve seen it all! If you have the opportunity before hand to ask about the dress code, then do so, especially if you are coming from an opposite environment.

A suit and tie or smart blazer and skirt/pants are a tried and true job interview outfit and sticking to the basics is a good idea. Depending on the environment, you may be required to cover tattoos or facial piercings. If you have the time, take care to craft a power outfit.

3) Have a Good Hand Shake

I shake hands with a minimum of 5 people per day and it is something that I really take notice of. An interview should start and end with a handshake and you want to make sure yours is confident, with a firm grip and don’t forget to make eye contact.

Avoid squeezing too hard, which can be seen as aggressive, or giving a weak, limp shake, which can imply a lack of interest or weakness.

4) Listen and Take Notes

Actively listening and being engaged in the conversation is so important in a job interview. You want to give the interviewer the opportunity to speak and share the information/ask the questions they need without interrupting, so bring a notebook to jot down any questions or reminders for talking points that arise.

I would recommend not using your smartphone or tablet to take notes as there is always the potential to be distracted by a random notification.

5) Ask Questions

A candidate that has questions prepared always stands out. It shows that you are interested in the role and have been actively engaged in the interview. It’s a best practice to give the interviewer the time to get the information they need from you and a good rule of thumb to ask a minimum of 2 questions. Two good examples are:

“Is there anything about my profile that suggest I am not a fit / good match for this role?”

This gives the interviewer the opportunity to think about you in the position and if they have any concerns, then it is a good time to ask if you can address them.

What will the successful candidate have accomplished in the first 30, 60 & 90 days?”

*Bonus Tip!

One more tip that I can share with you to put you ahead of the pack in an interview.

If you want the job, then ask for it! Of course the assumption is that if you are at an interview you are interested in the job – but few people actually say so and it is definitely something a potential employer wants to hear. So don’t be shy and tell them you are very interested in the opportunity and would like the chance to prove it.

Good luck!
