How Reiki Helped Me Find Clarity
By: Crystal Adair-Benning
Have you ever tried or heard of Reiki?
I recently started meditating and it changed my life in just 21 days. It hooked me and I wanted to find out more about ‘energy work’.
I started my search for more information online and found out that energy healing is a thing. I know that sounds crazy. Energy healing is a big deal. It’s all about opening yourself up. Finding blockages. The most efficient way of determining what’s going on with you is to see a Reiki Master.
Sounds bewitching, right?
Again, without much information or understanding of what I was going to do, I signed up. I thought reiki would be similar to massage.
Not even close.
Here’s what my first experience taught me:
1) You Don’t Have to Do Anything.
Crazy, right? But there’s no preparation. You won’t be getting naked. You don’t even need to shave your legs (bonus!). You need to show up. Just as you are and be as open to it as possible.
2) There’s little to no touching involved.
Your Reiki Master may touch your leg, your feet, a shoulder, etc but it’s not a massage. Just a simple connection between you both to let the energy flow. Your Master may put their hand directly on you or just above certain areas of your body. It can be done laying down or even sitting up.
3) You need to be open.
Reiki is all about healing the parts of you that are blocked. While you don’t have to tell your Reiki Master your life story, you should at least share what’s going on with you right now and what you’re hoping to have be the outcome. Whether it’s a broken heart, financial stress, or a general lack of life enthusiasm, changing your energy can change your life.
4) There are a LOT of questions.
Your Reiki Master will have you focus on different areas of your body and describe how they feel. I struggled a lot with this at first. I mean, how often are you ever forced to focus in on something like 2 inches below your belly button and 1 inch under the surface. It felt silly at first but watching my body react to the focus and questions was incredibly powerful.
5) Let go.
Okay, I know the flack headed my way for this one but it’s true. You need to just let go sometimes. I went in excited, nervous and not really knowing what I wanted. I was in the process of switching careers and I wanted some reassurance (I see that now) and I got it in spades. I didn’t know what to expect and nothing earth shattering happened on that table BUT what did happen was clarity.
So, what’s happened since?
I feel lighter and calmer.
I did get clarity but not just about my career situation. It opened me up to see the people and opportunities around me more clearly.
I feel happier. More grateful. More joyful.
In the end, I didn’t expect reiki to be “my thing”. I was curious enough to try and LOVE what I found out. I’ve since been back for one more session and, it again, felt like a totally different experience. It’s always interesting learning new things about yourself. For me, I’ve got some energy healing to do and the process is joyful. Who wouldn’t love that?
