5 Books That Changed My Life

Books

Books

I love the idea of self-improvement.

Which means I am drawn like crazy to books around the topic – whether they be about career, business, life, health or even organizing – I’m into it. Like in a big way. I was thinking of the books that changed my life and why they made such a difference to me. Here are my top picks:

4-Hour-Work-Week-by-Tim-Ferris

The 4-Hour Work Week – Tim Ferris

The funny thing is I didn’t even BUY this book.

My sister bought it and I decided to borrow it one day out of curiosity. I never could have imagined what a game-changer this book would be. At the time, I was in my late 20s, running my own business and I found it all very overwhelming. Reading this book, I was able to break it all down and really think about what I wanted my life to look like. Was I working for the sake of working? Or could I do things more efficiently and get more done in less time so I could have more time for fun stuff? The answer was a big HELL YES.

If you’re craving a major change, efficiency or thinking ahead about lifestyle design – Tim Ferris is the master of all of this in The 4-Hour Work Week. Take what is useful to you. I didn’t take all of his advice, but I could see how I could apply some of it to me. Stop working for work’s sake.

the-magic-of-thinking-big

The Magic of Thinking Big – David J. Schwartz

Think you can’t do something big? The biggest takeaway for me from The Magic of Thinking Big, ‘Why not me?’ Why was I underestimating myself and overestimating others. I could achieve the things that I saw other people achieving and it was time to stop putting myself down and lifting myself up – no one else is going to do this for you.

Need a confidence booster? This is book you need to read. Don’t be afraid to think big. I think this book influenced some of my crazier life decisions like selling our house, moving to LA and changing my entire life after a trip to Europe. I was no longer afraid to think big – so I came up with the craziest dreams possible and say them out loud, just to see what they sound like. I don’t take action on everything, but I’m not afraid of big ideas anymore either.

Crush-it-book

Crush It! – Gary Vaynerchuk

My biggest pet peeve in life are people who do something half-ass or do the minimal amount required of them. I can’t stand laziness. If you’re going to do something, do it at 150% and that’s what Crush It! is all about.

Need inspiration on how-to come out of the gate hard? Want to take something that’s just your hobby to the next level? I read this book when I first started blogging and it definitely influenced me on treating it like a business right away. I also learned a lot about personal branding and social media. Gary Vaynerchuk shares lots of great tips and this is a quick and easy read.

The-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-up

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – Marie Kondo

I’m a devoted minimalist. But even I found some great advice on the art of organizing and discarding stuff. If you’re someone that has a hard time getting rid of things or you’re getting ready to move – The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up is the book you’re going to want to read. I think you truly have to be in the right frame of mind (ready to discard) when you start this book.

Marie Kondo has this great way of tying joy with a clear, organized and uncluttered life. I definitely bought into her philosophy and let go of the guilt of getting rid of things. If it doesn’t bring you joy – let it go. This applies to both people and things. We actually read this book recently for book club.

best-life-diet-revised-updated-bob-greene

Bob Greene’s Best Life Diet – Bob Greene

Bob Greene is Oprah’s guru and that’s how I discovered him. I bought this book many, many years ago and I still refer to it to this day. It’s not really diet, but a series of small lifestyle changes you can make progressively with your health.

Whenever I feel like I’ve fallen off the healthy living wagon and I’m eating junk food and not working out – I pick up this book and start from phase one to help get me back on track. The Best Life Diet doesn’t advocate anything crazy and the advice is incredibly sensible. If you’re looking to make a change in your diet and overall health with lasting effects, then this is definitely one of the books you should read.
