9 Crazy Japanese Vending Machines
I was trying to spot all the crazy vending machines all over Tokyo during my recent trip to Japan. I would usually see a few Japanese Vending Machines in the subway, but you’ll also see them at the spa, at restaurants and in an alleyway.
Japan has the highest number of vending machines per capita and they range from typical, practical, weird and hilarious. Most of all – they are convenient. There is 1 machine for every 23 people! Here 9 crazy Japanese Vending Machines I spotted in Tokyo:
The Beverage Machine – Need coffee, tea, water or a soda? This robot (above) has everything you need with more selection then your typical soda machine you’d find in North America.
I could not find an apple in Tokyo that wasn’t gigantic or $4. SO it was incredibly funny to finally come across this Apple Vending Machine, selling slices of apples. This one is sort of gross when you think about how long that cut fruit has been sitting in this machine and what sort of things they need to put on these apple slices to keep them from going brown.
BUT – this didn’t seem to faze some people because this machine was almost empty by the end of the day. Sometimes you just need your fruit fix. Definitely one of the more interesting Japanese vending machines.
You can’t go wrong with this Japanese Chips Vending Machine selling what looks like Pringles for about $1 a pop. The chips come in a sleek little sleeve and obviously super popular!
Not really sure what this is all about and definitely one of the more unexpected Japanese Vending Machines I cam across during my recent trip to Tokyo. This Miniature Figurines Vending Machine looks like its filled with collectibles. I found it at the subway station, so maybe it’s more like a gumball machine where you get a cool toy out of it.
$6 for an umbrella ain’t bad and if you’re getting out of the station late and it’s pouring late – this Umbrella Vending Machine is definitely going to come in handy. Useful if all the stores are closed! I found this one at a subway outside of the core city centre – so possibly helpful if nothing is around.
Not unexpected, but different in design is this Japanese Newspaper Vending Machine with different titles all available from one box. It accepts payment with your prepaid Suica (subway) card too!
Well at least you know you won’t get carded by this Beer Vending Machine. Because sometimes you just need a cold one when all the stores are closed and you need to keep your post-izakaya buzz going.
So this isn’t one of the Japanese Vending Machines that spits out ramen, but rather this Ramen Vending Machine lets you pick out what you want to order and pay ahead of time. The machine prints out ticket that you hand to the hostess / server who will seat you at the noodle bar and bring your order when its ready. Super efficient!
This 24hr Hot Menu Vending Machine was by far the craziest one of the bunch. I found this at a 24hr spa where the food options must be limited after a certain time. What’s crazy is that this thing heats up frozen food and delivers it to you in just a couple minutes. Did not do a taste test. Would probably eat from this machine if I was drunk.
The future is here my friends.
Have you been to Japan? What are the craziest Japanese Vending Machines you’ve ever seen?
