Checking In: Marriott Courtyard Chelsea NYC
New York is easily one of my favourite cities to visit.
So when Paul’s aunt celebrated her 70th birthday this past weekend, we made plans to fly across the country to join the celebration. The most stressful thing about planning a last-minute trip to NYC is finding a good hotel room. We ended up choosing the Marriott Courtyard Chelsea which has an amazing location in the heart of Manhattan.
Getting There – We flew Delta direct from Portland to NYC into JFK Airport. From there it was one quick AirTrain ride to Jamaica Station and then the Long Island Railroad express with just two stops to Penn Station in just 20 minutes. We avoided a ton of traffic this way and the train is always such a smooth ride – especially if you get motion sick easily like me (hello NYC cabs!)

The Location – The Marriott Courtyard Chelsea is only a 4-minute walk from Penn Station and a 4-minute walk to 34th Street Herald Square Subway. It’s perfect for going in any which direction you need to get to.
The hotel is also super close to the gigantic Macy’s in Herald Square and lots of great shopping spots like Zara, Uniqlo and Urban Outfitters. We could also see the Empire State Building from our hotel! If it’s your first time in the city, this is the perfect home base as the hotel is tucked away on a quiet street. You can walk to all the major tourist attractions and you’re close to all the nightlife on the Lower East Side and close to the L train to get to Brooklyn.
The Lobby – The building itself is only 2.5 years old and everything was super modern and new. The lobby is located behind the front desk with lots of spots to lounge, work on your laptop, eat breakfast or just relax before your flight out. The Marriott Courtyard Chelsea also has a guest laundry room and a small gym in the basement with free weights and treadmills for squeezing in a workout.
The Room – I gotta say, we LOVED our room. Paul and I were upgraded to a King Suite which featured a separate one bedroom layout with a door. The main living room featured a pull-out sofa, a second TV, a wet bar, mini-fridge, microwave (great for heating up leftovers) dining room and desk area. It spanned the length of the buidling with a window on each side!
The beds were firm and comfortable with soft linens, firm pillows and central air – which is so key during a summer visit to NYC. A/C is via forced air so there’s no loud rumbling in the middle of the night when it turns on. There was also tons of closet space and we never felt cramped.

The Bathroom – This was so well thought-out with a shower and sink on one side of our hallway with a door. On the other side of the hallway was another bathroom area with the sink and a toilet. It’s great because two people can have access to a sink and bathroom at once. This King Suite room would be perfect for a bachelorette party or to share as a family.
Dewey’s Pub – Though we didn’t have time to indulge this time around, there’s a pub located just off the lobby area with a great beer list and lots of sports programming.
Around the Hotel – Koreatown is not far away and there are lots of interesting and affordable restaurants to check out here. We grabbed breakfast and lunch at Fresh & Co. around the corner and at Pret-A-Manger, a couple streets over.
Overall we had a really great stay at the Marriott Courtyard Chelsea. It felt waaaay hipper and cooler then any other Courtyard property I’ve stayed at in the past. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family looking for a central and affordable hotel option.
