The 7 Best Places To Go in 2016
Where do you want to go in 2016?
I traveled to some incredible places this past year and there are certain destinations I would return to in a heartbeat and a couple cities that were just ‘meh’. So this list is all about the exciting places you should definitely check out in 2016.
I do find that the only way to make travel a reality is to book that vacation time off now! Slot in dates on when you think it might be a good time to go away and start looking at flights to get that ball rolling. Otherwise, you’ll never get out there!
Here’s my 7 best places to go in 2016:
1. Austin, Texas
Music, BBQ, food trucks, quirky local shops and the outdoors. You won’t run of things to do in this laid-back Texan city. The food scene is bustling with lots of little restaurants and food trucks doing magnificent things. If you want to get outside, go for a dip at the Barton Springs Pool or a bike ride around the Butler Trail right in the heart of downtown Austin.
Think about booking a visit during the Austin City Limits music festival or during South By Southwest when the events calendar for Austin is packed full. See my Travel Guide to Austin, Texas for more trip ideas! Here’s the hotel we stayed at during our trip.
2. Portland, Oregon
I think I left a piece of my heart in Portland. It reminded me of a smaller, more compact Toronto because it was so walkable and filled with lots of ethnic food and artisanal small shops on every corner. If you’re a food lover like me, Portland is the place to go and fill your days with coffee, donuts, chocolate, cocktails, great restaurants and a visit to one of their many food carts. Summer and fall are the best weather-wise and make sure you explore the Pearl District. Read more from my Portland Travel Guide + here’s the wine-themed hotel where I stayed on my last visit.
3. Napa Valley + Sonoma, California
How does a relaxing getaway drinking wine in a vineyard and eating lots of incredible food sound to you? Maybe a sidetrip to a spa is also in order? Paul and I had a great little adventure glamping here and touring around Napa Valley + Sonoma. There’s is SO much to see here that we pared it down to a handful of wineries for our very first visit. Get a few ideas from my Napa Valley + Sonoma Travel Guide.
4. Maui, Hawaii
Aloha! If you’ve never been to Hawaii, I suggest you go – especially if you want a beach vacation mixed in with a bit of sightseeing and adventure. On our most recent trip to Maui, we were happy to do almost next to nothing while sunning ourselves at this hotel and this one too. For day trips, you can rent a car and drive the Road to Hana, hit up a Luau or even bike down a volcano! See my Travel Guide to Maui for more ideas!
5. Prince Edward County, Ontario
A favourite weekend trip of mine from when I used to live in Toronto. Prince Edward Coutny and Picton are like the Stars Hollow of Ontario with a charming Main Street to explore. The county is home to many wineries and the Sandbanks Provincial Park is not far at all. Here’s what I like to get up to when I get to go to Prince Edward County.
6. Nashville, Tennessee
Paul and I had a great time here at The Grand Ole Opry, The Country Music Hall of Fame and checking out all the different neighbourhoods and eateries in Nashville, Tennessee. Everyone here is just so nice! You can’t miss Loveless Cafe for their fried chicken + biscuits. I loved it so much, I wrote about it. If you have soft spot for Southern food, Nashville is the place to get a taste. See my Nashville Travel Guide for more!
7. Tokyo, Japan
The MOST-READ travel guide of all-time on This Beautiful Day has got to be my Travel Guide to Tokyo, Japan. This was hands-down one of my most favourite trips and I would go to Tokyo again tomorrow if I could. If you wanted to take a time machine to visit the future, I would say Japan comes pretty damn close. Not to be missed.
Where are you planning to go travel to in 2016? Any exciting plans?
